THE "F" WORD!


The popular "F" word (fuck!) is one of the most versatile words in the English language. It is used in many different informal situations...
But be careful! It doesn't have a very good reputation! =)

AIN'T

Today we talked about the use of the word "ain't".  This word is considered non-standard English, but it is highly used. You can find many examples in songs, movies, commercials, etc. 

But, what does ain't mean? Watch the following video. What is the meaning of ain't in each song?  What standard form is ain't replacing in each one?  Isn't? Aren't? Haven't? Am not???

Last class we were talking about women's jobs, men's jobs and prejudice in the workplace... Now I invite you to work with the following funny video! This is a scene from the American series “Friends”.  Ross and Rachel are looking for a nanny for their baby.

The sentences below are mentioned by the characters. Make sure you know the meanings before listening!

London to Paris by Eurostar 

There are many ways to cross from England to France. One way is by the Eurostar. Eurostar is the high-speed passenger train from London to Paris & Brussels via the Channel Tunnel (French: Le tunnel sous la Manche). It takes 2 hours 15 minutes for the 495 km  to Paris, and  1 hour 55 minutes for the 373 km  to Brussels. 
 
On 14 November 1994 Eurostar services began between Waterloo International station in London, Gare du Nord in Paris and South railway station in Brussels.

The Channel Tunnel (50.5km undersea rail tunnel) used by Eurostar services holds the record for having the longest undersea section in the world, as well as being the second longest rail tunnel in the world.
